University of Cartagena

University of Cartagena has been the forming space young Colombian Caribbean since the nineteenth century. Its history and significance are expressed since the dawn of independence and dream of the liberators Simon Bolivar and Francisco de Paula Santander, organizers of the novel Colombian State. They envisioned education as the ideal medium for the formation of the new generations to lead the destinies of the Republic.

In this context, public universities were developed. University of the Magdalena and Istmo was one of those, created by the Decree of 6 October 1827. It opens its doors on 11 November 1828 at its present site, the ancient cloister of the convent of San Agustin. The first name of the University revealed its coverage, Magdalena, territory that included at that time the entire Colombian Caribbean, including Panama. Eventually, the University received other names, including University of the Second District, Provincial College of Cartagena, Bolivian Institute, College of the Department, College Fernandez de Madrid, Universidad de Bolivar and finally University of Cartagena.

During the nineteenth century, and as advancing the construction of the state, it was training center of the Colombian political thought as her students attended from all regions that ended up performing high public office of national representation; including four-time president and father of the Constitution of 1886, Rafael Núñez Moledo.

The first academic programs that started the University, were the School of Arts, the School of Medicine and School of Law. In the twentieth century, assuming the dynamics of transformation of higher education, the University initiated a modernization process in response to the industrial reality experienced by the country and the region; expanding, diversifying and taking the entry of new social groups such as women.

University of Cartagena maintains its leadership, social recognition and prestige academic programs in different disciplines and sciences, institutes and research groups that promote social transformation in the region, leading educational master's and doctoral projects of the highest quality.

The University has understood that to keep up with the times, as its slogan says, we must take on the challenges imposed by time. Therefore not only distance form through information technology but also has appropriated thereof from radio and television; thus it encourages their development to integrate their academic projects to communities.

Today, in tune with the times, the Alma Mater takes on a new challenge: to stay as the best not only for the historical prestige that contributed to national development, but because globalization requires that it be translated as, taken from the proposed academic and sustained support from internal processes that lead to the satisfaction of those who for one reason or another relate their interests with the institution. Here not only the University dreamed up by the liberators, but for each that every day we have built.
